With so much of our time being spent in front of screens, it can be hard to get your preschooler to be and stay physically active. Here at The Step by Step School in Hoboken, we offer plenty of structured and free time that allows your child to get outdoors and have fun. Below, we’ll offer some great tips on how to promote physical activity with your preschooler. Schedule a tour today!

Make it Fun
Preschoolers love to have fun, explore, and learn and do new things. When emphasizing physical activity, choose fun activities, such as soccer, discovery hikes, or play dates with friends. Take the family dog along, too, for added adventure and antics.

Tailor the Time to Your Child’s Wants
It’s a good idea to try and choose outdoor activities that your child enjoys. For instance, if your child loves to play in the water but doesn’t like to get muddy, choose the swimming pool over your local lake instead. This will allow your preschooler to enjoy themselves and spend more time on that activity.
Keep the Activities Age-Appropriate
Preschoolers love to be outside and engage in activities. However, the activities must be age-appropriate, or they will probably become frustrated and not want to participate. For instance any activity that involves playing with a ball, following the leader, or playing tag is probably a great activity for them. However, skateboarding or other sports that require a lot of hand and eye coordination may not be as fun.

Invite Their Friends
While preschoolers love to play by themselves and interact with their parents, they also love to play with kids their own age. Be sure to invite their friends along to fun activities in order to double the fun and make them more interesting for your child.

Purchase the Equipment They Will Need for Outdoor Fun
If you have a basketball hoop, be sure you have a basketball. If your preschooler loves soccer, perhaps buying a backyard soccer net will help encourage them in their new-found sport. By supporting your child with the right outdoor equipment they will need to engage in outdoor play, they will spend more time outdoors. As a bonus, offer to play with them, too!
